The ECP® Process

Arrive in retail packaging

Electron beam application

A calibrated shower of electrons penetrates the packaging, reaching pathogens on surfaces and in tissue without ionizing the food itself.

Step 03

Instant pathogen elimination

99% reduction in Salmonella, E. coli O157:H7, and Listeria; elimination of anthracnose molds — in seconds, at ambient temperature.

Step 04

Return to cold chain

Treated produce re-enters the cold chain immediately, with extended shelf life, unaltered sensory characteristics, and no residue.

The Science

Electrons at work — at the molecular level.

Electron beam technology applies ionizing radiation at carefully controlled doses — measured in kiloGray (kGy). At sub-sterilization doses (typically 1–3 kGy for fresh produce), the beam disrupts pathogen DNA, preventing reproduction and eliminating the organisms responsible for foodborne illness and spoilage.

The energy levels used are specifically calibrated to avoid inducing radioactivity in the treated material. The process is entirely physical — no chemical intermediaries, no heat transfer, no moisture change. The produce that exits treatment is indistinguishable from what entered, except that it is safer and will stay fresher longer.
